After 15 years of entrepreneurship, what's The one piece of advice you can give women starting their journey today that you wish you had known on day one?

Whoa. Well, The first thing is I've actually been an entrepreneur for way longer than 15 years. This is actually The second business that I built from The, well, maybe it's The third actually from The ground up because for many years I was actually an architectural lighting designer and engineer. And so at The, finally it was enough, right? You know, about 30 years of that, I was like, okay, it's not fun anymore. I'm.
I'm swapping and at that point I had been doing healing work, but I'd been doing it for free, you know, to get experience and so on. And so transitioning over. But what was interesting to me was that unlike The lighting business, because I did very, very high profile buildings, you know, The guy that I worked for at one point, we used to joke that we started with The Empire State Building and worked our way down.
So I was doing very, very big, very, so people would literally track me down. You know, I never had to, I never had to ask for business. People were finding me and saying, please, will you later building? You know, it was that sort of thing really. I was like, yeah, yeah. It was, it was like that. But starting in The healing business, it was a whole other, it was a whole other world. It was a whole other world. So I had no idea that you had to have things like lists.

I didn't know anything about networking. I knew nothing about any of that sort of thing. So I think I wish I had known that that was The sort of thing that you really needed to do. It's like there's this kind of ramping up thing. You know, it doesn't, you don't just hang out your shingle and The people show up at your door. No, it doesn't work like that exactly.

They do, and The thing that makes me crazy, especially being in The, I'll call it The woo world, you know, because I'm not woo woo, you know, I'm woo, but not woo woo, right? But there's, you know, but there are these people out there that say, oh, if I just, you know, sit on my couch and attract, you know, The law of attraction and all that sort of like, no, honey, no.

You have to get out your door. You have to meet people. You actually have to go do things. And The other thing I think too is it wasn't immediately obvious what The business structure should be. And I think that's something that people really need to inform yourself depending on what you intend to do. Different structures work.

work better than others. The other thing I didn't know anything about was I had no idea there were things called virtual assistants. I'd always had staff, you know. I didn't know that. I had no idea that there was such a thing that you could actually work with people online over The phone or whatever to do stuff. I didn't have that. I always had people who came to my office and did things.

I mean, The world had really changed a lot from when I started out in lighting design. Back then, I mean, The fax machine was brand new. It was a very different world, a very, very different world.

Oh, let me ask you this next question. So in The realm of business, sacrifices are inevitable, right? Can you share a pivotal moment where a significant sacrifice actually turned into a substantial success for you?

Well, you know, I'm not sure I agree with you about sacrificing.
I don't like that word. I think that there are difficult choices that you have to make at times. But if I can avoid sacrifice, I do. I don't go there. I don't do that. I don't do that. So I think that you end up making sacrifices when you haven't planned well. If you really haven't thought through what's important to you.

Then you can end up in a situation where, yeah, it's going to be a sacrifice. Maybe you're sacrificing time with your spouse. Maybe you're sacrificing time with your kid. Maybe there's something like that. Something's got to go, as it were. But I think when you're in business for yourself, you really, really have to get straight with yourself about what's important to you and what you're willing to do and what you're not willing to do.

in order to have The business that you want in order to have a life that you really think is worth living. And I think The other thing I think around sacrifice is, I think it's kind of a conversation and a hidden belief. There are, I call them fine family traditions, these hidden genetic things, these family things, these family things like.

You know, there are people think, oh, you have to sacrifice. No!

You know, I mean, and it's true. I mean, you know, time is relative. Time is literally a relative thing. So I mean, sometimes things go lickety split and you think they're going to take.

So they'll spend time, a gajillion hours trying to put together a website. There are plenty of thriving businesses who don't have a website. They might have a landing page, maybe, and they have million dollar businesses without it.

It's like, no, didn't really need to do that. I didn't, I could've, you know, doubled my money by folding it over and putting it back in my pocket.

Easiest tip ever to double your money, listeners, for sure. I love that. Oh my gosh. We'll move on to The next question. Building a successful business often means wearing multiple hats. How do you balance The roles of life mastery consultant, hypnotist and healer without spreading yourself too thin?
Liz Bull (13:31.46)
Well, let me explain. Those are modalities and I'm massively intuitive as you well know. And I just mix and match as I'm guided in a session. So it's not like I only have The hypnosis business, I only have this, no, it doesn't work like that. Once we decide what we're gonna do with whoever, then we're just mixing and matching as we go along. So it's not a question of balancing those at all.
But in terms of The other hats, I mean, anybody who's a solopreneur wears a lot of hats. By definition, by definition, they just, it's The way it goes.

Yeah, for sure. So how would you say The listener could balance their hats without spreading themselves too thin?
Liz Bull (14:19.396)
I think once again, it comes to priorities. And The other thing is I don't think it's not balance. It's not balance. It's choices. It's choices and priorities. And I quite honestly, I live and die by my daytime or my agenda. So, and I just finished doing a planning session for The next quarter. You know, what are my priorities? What are The three big ones? You know, and limit it to three. Otherwise you make yourself nuts, right?

And then you have to carve out time in your agenda to actually do them. And once you've done that, then The balancing goes away. That whole juggling thing, gone. Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone. So yeah, so it's planning it as what are you gonna do today towards The thing you said you wanted to accomplish in The next 90 days?

60 to 90, that's another interesting thing too. It's like I plan it for The 90, but years ago I had a very interesting coach and in her program we actually used to redo things every 60 days. And The reason for that is because The 90 day plans tend to be starting to fall apart at 60 days. So that's something to be aware of. It's something to really be aware of is that The 90 day plans start crumbling at 60. And you have to kind of, you know.

Yeah, that's an interesting strategy. I mean, I do do The 90 days. I have a long term plan, 25 years actually, and every 90 days of that is 1 % of that overall plan. But it's interesting that you say that I have my overall plan for The 90 days, but every single month, I revisit The strategy and like you say, because it does start to.
go awry. Something pops up and it's suddenly, oh, let me focus on that. No, actually, what are The priorities in my strategy in my plan for The next month?

Yeah, yeah, you have to really remind yourself because it's easy to go, oh, it's like, oh, right, Shina, no.

Yeah, yeah, something comes up and you're like, oh, let me produce a piece of content about that. No, actually, that doesn't fit into my strategy right now, right? Or let me run off to wherever in The world because there's an interesting event. Well, no, actually, that doesn't fit in my strategy right now.

Yeah, you really have to be aware, you know, and keep reminding yourself of what The plan was in The first place. But having said that, you can also kind of check in with yourself and say, hmm, does that really still serve me? Am I really still interested and committed in that? You know, because life happens, things change. Things change, and sometimes you do have to.

Yeah, yeah. I always talk to my clients about, you know, flying. When I fly an airplane, when anybody flies an airplane, you know, we put our flight plan and it's kind of like your strategy. You've got your plan, you know where you want to go. We want to land at this airport here. 80 % of The time when we're actually flying, we're off course.
80 % of The entire thing we're off course because we're constantly being blown a little bit by The wind and we have to correct or you know some turbulence will come and take us up a little bit we have to correct we're constantly correcting but The thing is we land at The airport that we put in The flight plan.

And The other thing is, you know, when I help female founders get investment as well now, it's another thing, you know, you can be there and you can have your pitch together and you can have your board and you can have all of The things, but then something will come along in due diligence or whatever and...
you have to change The plan a little bit, right? So we're working on some projects now, some really massive projects. One I'm really excited about, water purification. And it's these things, they can change on a dime.
So you always have to have that flexibility as much as you have your strategy and your plan, you always have to have a little room to correct.

Yeah, and sometimes you have to have plan B and C. Yeah, sometimes you have to do that. And it's wise if you can do that upfront rather than on The fly. On The fly, it's a little harder. Yeah, yeah, for sure. But The business landscape really changes day by day.

Yeah, it definitely is an interesting tool and we do implement some of that within what we do. But let me ask you this question reflecting on The past 15 years anyway of your journey. What were The key strategies that helped you scale your business and maintain The success over The years?

So The first thing is scaling is a relative term.
Scaling is a relative term. And that's one of The things that you really have to decide on. And it depends a lot on your personality. Your personality and in my opinion, it depends a lot on your human design. Not everybody is built to do massive multi -million dollar businesses. They're not. They're not. It's.

or even want to, or even want to. I mentioned that I had businesses before this business, and there was a time when I had my construction company business, when I had 20 mouths to feed. They weren't my kids. They were grown -ups with big appetites. And that was something, and I really, I did not enjoy it. I didn't enjoy it, and I swore I would never do that again. Ever, not ever.
So I am perfectly happy at this point. Then it was by design when I learned that I could learn discovered really that I could move energy at very long distances. I thought, great, as long as I have a phone back then it was a phone. Nobody did zoom back then.

It was really zoom wasn't on The scene, right? Wasn't on The scene. And so I said, great, you know, I can work from anywhere, anywhere. We got a phone. I can work and I don't have to have an office. Yes. I don't have to have an office. Fabulous. Fabulous. I can, you know, I can do healing work on a ship. I can do it on a train. I can do it.

That doesn't interest me. My sweet spot really is really, really deep, deep, deep, deep work with one -on -one work. That's what I love doing. That's my favorite. So The reality is, is that one -on -one work,

Well, there are only 24 hours in The day. That's it, right? So there's only so many people that you can handle doing one -on -one work. But I'm fine with that. I'm absolutely fine with that. I make a very decent living. And I don't need to go multi -million. I can do investments to do that. I don't have to make that money. I can do it other ways. It doesn't have to be my business. You know what I'm saying? But I think that people have to really take stock of themselves.

You know, it's like, I am done with these guys. I'm done. Just done. So, I mean, as it turns out, you know, I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I did take $750 ,000 off that job. And after that, The guy was like, you know.
