Michelle Margaret Marques (00:01.328)
Hi! Oh my gosh, I am so excited to be here today on The Bloody Hell Chelle podcast. The very first recording, my very first amazing guest, Liz Boo. Today, we are peeling back The curtain on what it takes to not just survive, but thrive in business and The entrepreneurial arena. And my guest today, well, she's no spring chicken at this. part invaluable wisdom. I cannot wait for you to listen to this conversation. Liz, thank you so much for joining me.
Liz Bull (01:32.516)
My pleasure always. My pleasure always. Have fun.
Michelle Margaret Marques (01:35.312)
Oh my gosh. Liz, I have so many things to talk to you about today, honestly. I'm so looking forward to this conversation. Let me ask you this question first. After 15 years of entrepreneurship, what's The one piece of advice you can give women starting their journey today that you wish you had known on day one?
Liz Bull (02:01.046)
Wow!
Michelle Margaret Marques (02:02.544)
Hahaha!
Liz Bull (02:04.868)
Whoa. Well, The first thing is I've actually been an entrepreneur for way longer than 15 years. This is actually The second business that I built from The, well, maybe it's The third actually from The ground up because for many years I was actually an architectural lighting designer and engineer. And so at The, finally it was enough, right? You know, about 30 years of that, I was like, okay, it's not fun anymore. I'm.
I'm swapping and at that point I had been doing healing work, but I'd been doing it for free, you know, to get experience and so on. And so transitioning over. But what was interesting to me was that unlike The lighting business, because I did very, very high profile buildings, you know, The guy that I worked for at one point, we used to joke that we started with The Empire State Building and worked our way down.
So I was doing very, very big, very, so people would literally track me down. You know, I never had to, I never had to ask for business. People were finding me and saying, please, will you later building? You know, it was that sort of thing really. I was like, yeah, yeah. It was, it was like that. But starting in The healing business, it was a whole other, it was a whole other world. It was a whole other world. So I had no idea that you had to have things like lists.
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (03:37.648)
I love how you say that. Things like lists.
Liz Bull (03:40.484)
I didn't know anything about networking. I knew nothing about any of that sort of thing. So I think I wish I had known that that was The sort of thing that you really needed to do. It's like there's this kind of ramping up thing. You know, it doesn't, you don't just hang out your shingle and The people show up at your door. No, it doesn't work like that exactly.
Michelle Margaret Marques (04:06.448)
Oh my gosh, but how many people think it does work like that though Liz?
Liz Bull (04:10.084)
They do, and The thing that makes me crazy, especially being in The, I'll call it The woo world, you know, because I'm not woo woo, you know, I'm woo, but not woo woo, right? But there's, you know, but there are these people out there that say, oh, if I just, you know, sit on my couch and attract, you know, The law of attraction and all that sort of like, no, honey, no.
Michelle Margaret Marques (04:24.624)
You and I both.
Liz Bull (04:38.084)
You have to get out your door. You have to meet people. You actually have to go do things. And The other thing I think too is it wasn't immediately obvious what The business structure should be. And I think that's something that people really need to inform yourself depending on what you intend to do. Different structures work.
Michelle Margaret Marques (04:40.208)
You have to go do some things, go figure!
Liz Bull (05:07.684)
work better than others. The other thing I didn't know anything about was I had no idea there were things called virtual assistants. I'd always had staff, you know. I didn't know that. I had no idea that there was such a thing that you could actually work with people online over The phone or whatever to do stuff. I didn't have that. I always had people who came to my office and did things.
Michelle Margaret Marques (05:28.624)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (05:34.16)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (05:34.692)
At one point I had like a lot of them.
Michelle Margaret Marques (05:40.656)
The virtual world, it's amazing, isn't it? How we can be here right now. Well, I'm in Barbados right now and you're in New York, right?
Liz Bull (05:48.996)
No, actually, I'm in North Carolina right now, but that's OK. Yeah, but that's OK. It's North. It's one of The Norths.
Michelle Margaret Marques (05:51.152)
You're in North Carolina right now. Okay.
It's not that it's somewhere in The States. So The point is we're in completely different countries and we're here right now having this amazing conversation.
Liz Bull (06:02.468)
you
Liz Bull (06:06.02)
We are, we are, we are. So I don't know, that was just a few of The things that I wish I had known. Starting another business from scratch. Because The world had changed. I mean, The world had really changed a lot from when I started out in lighting design. Back then, I mean, The fax machine was brand new. It was a very different world, a very, very different world.
Michelle Margaret Marques (06:14.16)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (06:33.488)
From your age now less.
Liz Bull (06:36.1)
Well, you know, and that's fine, but that's The truth of it. That's The truth of it.
Michelle Margaret Marques (06:41.072)
No, we did promise lots of wisdom. We did promise a raw straightforward conversation on this podcast, so here we go. We know how to bring it to you, for sure.
Liz Bull (06:48.26)
We did. We did indeed, you know? Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
Michelle Margaret Marques (06:57.744)
Oh, let me ask you this next question. So in The realm of business, sacrifices are inevitable, right? Can you share a pivotal moment where a significant sacrifice actually turned into a substantial success for you?
Liz Bull (07:16.9)
Well, you know, I'm not sure I agree with you about sacrificing.
I don't like that word. I think that there are difficult choices that you have to make at times. But if I can avoid sacrifice, I do. I don't go there. I don't do that. I don't do that. So I think that you end up making sacrifices when you haven't planned well. If you really haven't thought through what's important to you.
Michelle Margaret Marques (07:28.08)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (07:33.104)
Don't we all?
Liz Bull (07:50.308)
Then you can end up in a situation where, yeah, it's going to be a sacrifice. Maybe you're sacrificing time with your spouse. Maybe you're sacrificing time with your kid. Maybe there's something like that. Something's got to go, as it were. But I think when you're in business for yourself, you really, really have to get straight with yourself about what's important to you and what you're willing to do and what you're not willing to do.
Michelle Margaret Marques (08:14.288)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (08:17.572)
in order to have The business that you want in order to have a life that you really think is worth living. And I think The other thing I think around sacrifice is, I think it's kind of a conversation and a hidden belief. There are, I call them fine family traditions, these hidden genetic things, these family things, these family things like.
Michelle Margaret Marques (08:24.272)
Mmm!
Michelle Margaret Marques (08:43.152)
Yes.
Liz Bull (08:45.284)
We're a family of hard workers, right? And there's a source of pride that comes from that. Well, suppose you could get it done easily. Why not do that? Why would you make it hard if it could be easy? Oh, if it's easy, there's gotta be something wrong with it or I'm cheating or something like that, right? And I think that sacrifice is kind of in that category. You know, there are people think, oh, you have to sacrifice. No!
Michelle Margaret Marques (08:54.64)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (09:08.272)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (09:13.444)
No, actually you don't.
Michelle Margaret Marques (09:17.488)
When I put this question together, this is for The listeners, but when I put this question together I knew she would go up against me on this, you know.
Liz Bull (09:28.228)
Bye!
Liz Bull (09:31.908)
So maybe The better question is where did you sacrifice something where it turned out you didn't have to? You know? Maybe not for me of course, but for somebody else.
Michelle Margaret Marques (09:37.68)
Yeah, yeah, so we are D2.
Michelle Margaret Marques (09:47.824)
I love that. Oh my gosh. Okay. So, well that answers that question. We'll move on to The next one. So,
Liz Bull (09:50.724)
But you know, but you know that I do want to finish up with one more comment about that. I think that one of The things that people mess up on is not realizing how much time things take. You know, I mean, and it's true. I mean, you know, time is relative. Time is literally a relative thing. So I mean, sometimes things go lickety split and you think they're going to take.
Michelle Margaret Marques (09:58.608)
Yeah, sure.
Michelle Margaret Marques (10:07.92)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (10:18.372)
you know, two weeks and it's like, boom, got it done. And other times it's a slog depending. But it's back to The priorities and realizing that people in your life take time. They do. And so that you have to allow for that. Otherwise, you know, certain people's noses get out of joint as it were, you know, and relationships get tested because, you know, you're...
Michelle Margaret Marques (10:41.04)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (10:45.04)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (10:47.396)
you're hard set on getting your business together and built and so on. And I think in The beginning stages, things do take a bit more time. Yeah, it doesn't mean they're hard, they just take more time. It takes time to talk to people, it does. It takes time to get The word out. It takes time to get your this, that and The other thing put together.
Michelle Margaret Marques (10:56.816)
Yeah, they do.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:02.832)
It does.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:08.656)
Yeah, refine your outreach, you know, do it all.
Liz Bull (11:11.428)
all of that. It doesn't get done by itself. It just doesn't. And unless, yeah, no.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:16.08)
Oh gosh, no, it takes a long time to get these things right and you have to always tweak it and add something and improve and take something away and it's a constant process, right?
Liz Bull (11:27.012)
It is. It is a process. It sure is. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:31.12)
Yeah, it's not something that's one and done. Okay, we did that process now. Now it's...
Liz Bull (11:36.484)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. And having said that, there are a lot of things that people think they need to have in business and they don't. So they'll spend time, a gajillion hours trying to put together a website. There are plenty of thriving businesses who don't have a website. They might have a landing page, maybe, and they have million dollar businesses without it.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:49.584)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (11:58.256)
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah, I know this is.
Liz Bull (12:05.316)
But everybody's like, oh, you know, you gotta have this and you gotta have that. No, not necessarily.
Michelle Margaret Marques (12:10.128)
Yeah, yeah. I know this is something that I talk about with my clients a lot. For sure, these all The bells and whistles and this and that and social media and managers and marketing and this and branding. Give yourself a break. Get your relationships tight.
Liz Bull (12:26.116)
No. No.
Michelle Margaret Marques (12:30.544)
Make sure your relationships are working. Make sure you're building relationships with The right people. Then you can think about adding on all of The other things. Whatever. Exactly.
Liz Bull (12:40.228)
If ever, if ever. And I think that's, let's add this to one of The things that I wish I had known. Like, there are a lot of things that I went out and did. It's like, no, didn't really need to do that. I didn't, I could've, you know, doubled my money by folding it over and putting it back in my pocket.
Michelle Margaret Marques (12:47.664)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (12:54.064)
Yeah. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (13:07.44)
Easiest tip ever to double your money, listeners, for sure. I love that. Oh my gosh. We'll move on to The next question. Building a successful business often means wearing multiple hats. How do you balance The roles of life mastery consultant, hypnotist and healer without spreading yourself too thin?
Liz Bull (13:31.46)
Well, let me explain. Those are modalities and I'm massively intuitive as you well know. And I just mix and match as I'm guided in a session. So it's not like I only have The hypnosis business, I only have this, no, it doesn't work like that. Once we decide what we're gonna do with whoever, then we're just mixing and matching as we go along. So it's not a question of balancing those at all.
But in terms of The other hats, I mean, anybody who's a solopreneur wears a lot of hats. By definition, by definition, they just, it's The way it goes.
Michelle Margaret Marques (14:08.976)
Yeah, for sure. So how would you say The listener could balance their hats without spreading themselves too thin?
Liz Bull (14:19.396)
I think once again, it comes to priorities. And The other thing is I don't think it's not balance. It's not balance. It's choices. It's choices and priorities. And I quite honestly, I live and die by my daytime or my agenda. So, and I just finished doing a planning session for The next quarter. You know, what are my priorities? What are The three big ones? You know, and limit it to three. Otherwise you make yourself nuts, right?
Michelle Margaret Marques (14:48.784)
Yup.
Liz Bull (14:49.444)
And then you have to carve out time in your agenda to actually do them. And once you've done that, then The balancing goes away. That whole juggling thing, gone. Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone. So yeah, so it's planning it as what are you gonna do today towards The thing you said you wanted to accomplish in The next 90 days?
Michelle Margaret Marques (14:55.536)
Yes.
Michelle Margaret Marques (15:03.28)
Yeah, I love that.
Michelle Margaret Marques (15:15.824)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (15:16.164)
60 to 90, that's another interesting thing too. It's like I plan it for The 90, but years ago I had a very interesting coach and in her program we actually used to redo things every 60 days. And The reason for that is because The 90 day plans tend to be starting to fall apart at 60 days. So that's something to be aware of. It's something to really be aware of is that The 90 day plans start crumbling at 60. And you have to kind of, you know.
Michelle Margaret Marques (15:33.968)
Interesting.
Michelle Margaret Marques (15:42.256)
Mmm.
Liz Bull (15:44.804)
recalibrate.
Michelle Margaret Marques (15:46.288)
Yeah, that's an interesting strategy. I mean, I do do The 90 days. I have a long term plan, 25 years actually, and every 90 days of that is 1 % of that overall plan. But it's interesting that you say that I have my overall plan for The 90 days, but every single month, I revisit The strategy and like you say, because it does start to.
go awry. Something pops up and it's suddenly, oh, let me focus on that. No, actually, what are The priorities in my strategy in my plan for The next month?
Liz Bull (16:26.628)
Yeah, yeah, you have to really remind yourself because it's easy to go, oh, it's like, oh, right, Shina, no.
Michelle Margaret Marques (16:31.568)
Yeah, yeah, something comes up and you're like, oh, let me produce a piece of content about that. No, actually, that doesn't fit into my strategy right now, right? Or let me run off to wherever in The world because there's an interesting event. Well, no, actually, that doesn't fit in my strategy right now.
Liz Bull (16:49.54)
Yeah, you really have to be aware, you know, and keep reminding yourself of what The plan was in The first place. But having said that, you can also kind of check in with yourself and say, hmm, does that really still serve me? Am I really still interested and committed in that? You know, because life happens, things change. Things change, and sometimes you do have to.
Michelle Margaret Marques (17:08.464)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (17:12.4)
Yeah. Yeah.
Liz Bull (17:17.348)
figure out something else, you know? I mean, who expected COVID? You know, who expected The Spanish Inquisition? You know, things change.
Michelle Margaret Marques (17:20.784)
Oh, absolutely.
Yeah, yeah. I always talk to my clients about, you know, flying. When I fly an airplane, when anybody flies an airplane, you know, we put our flight plan and it's kind of like your strategy. You've got your plan, you know where you want to go. We want to land at this airport here. 80 % of The time when we're actually flying, we're off course.
80 % of The entire thing we're off course because we're constantly being blown a little bit by The wind and we have to correct or you know some turbulence will come and take us up a little bit we have to correct we're constantly correcting but The thing is we land at The airport that we put in The flight plan.
Liz Bull (18:10.66)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, well said. Well said. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (18:15.28)
Yeah, thank you. I do have some wisdom.
Liz Bull (18:21.22)
Of course you do. Of course you do. You've been up.
Michelle Margaret Marques (18:25.424)
Oh my gosh. And The other thing is, you know, when I help female founders get investment as well now, it's another thing, you know, you can be there and you can have your pitch together and you can have your board and you can have all of The things, but then something will come along in due diligence or whatever and...
you have to change The plan a little bit, right? So we're working on some projects now, some really massive projects. One I'm really excited about, water purification. And it's these things, they can change on a dime.
So you always have to have that flexibility as much as you have your strategy and your plan, you always have to have a little room to correct.
Liz Bull (19:12.612)
Yeah, and sometimes you have to have plan B and C. Yeah, sometimes you have to do that. And it's wise if you can do that upfront rather than on The fly. On The fly, it's a little harder. Yeah, yeah, for sure. But The business landscape really changes day by day.
Michelle Margaret Marques (19:14.992)
Yeah, and C and D and E and F.
Michelle Margaret Marques (19:27.44)
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (19:38.128)
Oh.
Liz Bull (19:38.308)
It's moment by moment by moment, really, you know, The whole thing with AI that wasn't even thought of. Wasn't even thought of even, you know, I mean, nobody, nobody was doing that particularly. And now it's like, everybody's doing it. I'm not sure that's a great idea, but you know, it is, it is an interesting, it is an interesting tool. That's for sure.
Michelle Margaret Marques (19:46.832)
Yeah.
It's changing things.
Michelle Margaret Marques (20:00.624)
Yeah, it definitely is an interesting tool and we do implement some of that within what we do. But let me ask you this question reflecting on The past 15 years anyway of your journey. What were The key strategies that helped you scale your business and maintain The success over The years?
Liz Bull (20:22.532)
So The first thing is scaling is a relative term.
Scaling is a relative term. And that's one of The things that you really have to decide on. And it depends a lot on your personality. Your personality and in my opinion, it depends a lot on your human design. Not everybody is built to do massive multi -million dollar businesses. They're not. They're not. It's.
Michelle Margaret Marques (20:58.224)
or even want to.
Liz Bull (21:00.068)
or even want to, or even want to. I mentioned that I had businesses before this business, and there was a time when I had my construction company business, when I had 20 mouths to feed. They weren't my kids. They were grown -ups with big appetites. And that was something, and I really, I did not enjoy it. I didn't enjoy it, and I swore I would never do that again. Ever, not ever.
So I am perfectly happy at this point. Then it was by design when I learned that I could learn discovered really that I could move energy at very long distances. I thought, great, as long as I have a phone back then it was a phone. Nobody did zoom back then.
Michelle Margaret Marques (21:47.472)
Yeah, 15 years ago, it was so soon.
Liz Bull (21:50.18)
It was really zoom wasn't on The scene, right? Wasn't on The scene. And so I said, great, you know, I can work from anywhere, anywhere. We got a phone. I can work and I don't have to have an office. Yes. I don't have to have an office. Fabulous. Fabulous. I can, you know, I can do healing work on a ship. I can do it on a train. I can do it.
Michelle Margaret Marques (22:04.048)
Yes.
Michelle Margaret Marques (22:13.936)
Look at that! Look at you doing The early version of non -location business that everybody is dying for these days.
Liz Bull (22:18.98)
Exactly. Exactly. I've been doing it for a long time. So it's like, no, I don't do that. So I was very clear that I don't particularly like thinking about maybe, maybe putting together a mastermind for women in construction, engineering, and architecture. I don't know if I told you. Did I tell you that I spoke in London last year to The? Yeah, well, it was, it was.
Michelle Margaret Marques (22:44.944)
I know you went to London but you didn't tell me it's folk there.
Liz Bull (22:48.9)
Yeah, I was speaking at The conference for The award winners, The award finalists for The women in construction, engineering and architecture. 250 women, right? And thinking about my own experience, you know, being like The only woman in The room most of The time with this, you know, testosterone soup. I was...
Michelle Margaret Marques (22:56.336)
Oh wow!
Michelle Margaret Marques (23:05.808)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (23:11.856)
Ah, I love that testosterone soup.
Liz Bull (23:14.5)
Or stew maybe, I'm not sure.
Michelle Margaret Marques (23:16.688)
I like how you emphasize The soup.
Liz Bull (23:20.036)
Yeah, really, it's like, it's dripping from The walls.
Michelle Margaret Marques (23:27.12)
All that gives me a whole different version in my head, lights up.
Liz Bull (23:29.668)
No, no, Shelley, Shelley, Shelley. So I'm thinking perhaps of getting together a smallish thing, but by and large, I'm not that interested in running group programs particularly. That doesn't interest me. My sweet spot really is really, really deep, deep, deep, deep work with one -on -one work. That's what I love doing. That's my favorite. So The reality is, is that one -on -one work,
Michelle Margaret Marques (23:33.424)
Yes.
Liz Bull (23:59.46)
Well, there are only 24 hours in The day. That's it, right? So there's only so many people that you can handle doing one -on -one work. But I'm fine with that. I'm absolutely fine with that. I make a very decent living. And I don't need to go multi -million. I can do investments to do that. I don't have to make that money. I can do it other ways. It doesn't have to be my business. You know what I'm saying? But I think that people have to really take stock of themselves.
Michelle Margaret Marques (24:21.52)
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Liz Bull (24:29.604)
and figure out how does their energy run. My personal human design is I'm a projector. I don't have those motor centers that generators and manifesting generators have. I need breaks during The day. I need to go take myself outside, sit on The patio, have a nice cuppa before I get on with The rest of my day. That's what I need to do. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (24:55.152)
I love that. Yeah. And it's one of The things I do with my clients, my female clients. I, you know, I'm a big believer in building your business around your life and not your life around your business.
Liz Bull (25:06.212)
Mmm.
Yeah, that's absolutely right. That's absolutely right. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (25:12.624)
And what you're talking about right there is exactly that. I'm The same. I like to watch The hummingbirds during The day and, you know, I like to take time on my patio walk in my garden. I'm very much like you. I need to get outside and be in nature.
Liz Bull (25:28.42)
Yeah, that's what rejuvenates me and makes me happy. It makes me happy, you know? And why are we here? We're here to be happy. We're here to be happy.
Michelle Margaret Marques (25:30.96)
Yeah, we're here to help lots of people and be happy ourselves. Gosh, how amazing is that?
Liz Bull (25:40.388)
Mm -hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know, right? Far cry from doing The, you know, The nine to five or nine to nine. It's a lot of people doing nine to nine and working.
Michelle Margaret Marques (25:50.384)
Right, oh my gosh. I'm unemployable. I've said this for a very long time. I can't do that. Clock in and clock out when everyone else tells me it's okay.
Liz Bull (26:02.788)
Well, and here's why, Shell, because one of your values is doing a really, really phenomenal job.
And in most of those environments, that is not The value. That's not The value.
Michelle Margaret Marques (26:18.736)
Yeah.
Yeah, it's so true. I remember one time a company that I did work for, and it's so funny, I, you know, very, very focused in my work and would come in each day, say good morning to The other females, The other workers there, and get on with The job that I was there to do. And one day this one of The girls, she said to me, you know, she said, you're not very nice. You've got a bit of an attitude. And I was thinking, excuse me.
She said, yeah, you never speak to anyone. You're always just on The phone. And I remember thinking, isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing? Of course, I was. That's exactly what they're paying me for. I was a top salesperson in The company at The time, go figure. She said, yeah, but you're rude. You don't even talk to anyone. I said.
Liz Bull (27:01.284)
I think they're paying me to do that.
Michelle Margaret Marques (27:14.896)
Okay, I think your perception of rude is very different to me actually being rude to you, right? It's like, come on, I'm not being rude to you. I'm doing what I'm paid to come here to do. It's so funny how people think, you know, these different ways. And that's honestly, I actually got fired from that job because she didn't like me. But anyway, we're veering right off course because she didn't like The fact that I was focused and doing very well. So hi.
Liz Bull (27:44.644)
Mm -hmm. Oh well, time to course correct here.
Michelle Margaret Marques (27:45.616)
Hmm. Oh, it was a huge course, correct. But anyway, let me ask my next question. Mind body technology is The core of your practice, right? So how has integrating that into your business model set you apart in The landscape of entrepreneurial, The entrepreneurship?
Liz Bull (27:57.476)
Yes.
Liz Bull (28:09.06)
That's a great question. That's a great question. And you alluded to The fact that I'm a mature woman. Yes. Just, yes. So just as I believe that if you're in The coaching business, you yourself need a coach, right? Otherwise, what are you talking about? If you don't believe in coaching, then...
Michelle Margaret Marques (28:15.44)
Thanks for watching!
Michelle Margaret Marques (28:19.952)
Yes. I think we may have touched on that one or two times.
Michelle Margaret Marques (28:34.672)
Yes.
Liz Bull (28:39.556)
Hello, there's something that's really off about that. So The truth is that, you know, I'm a master healer in, I don't know, I think I'm up to like 23 different modalities now that I mix and matches I'm guided. I get energy work done several times a week, different kinds of it. And so I'm healthy. I mean, a lot of my contemporaries quite honestly are dead.
Michelle Margaret Marques (28:55.312)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (29:04.74)
or they have a lot of illness and, you know, I mean, they've got stuff going on. They have no energy. And I'm not that. I'm alive, I'm well, I have a lot of energy. I tend to be up early. I don't stay up particularly late, although I don't go to, I'm not one of these people who goes to bed at seven o 'clock at night either, but you know. So I have a lot of energy. You know, my brain works, right? My skin looks fantastic.
Michelle Margaret Marques (29:13.424)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (29:24.848)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (29:34.704)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (29:34.788)
Right? So that's what we're talking about here is that integration you have to have, I eat well, I drink water during The day, I get enough sleep, right? I exercise every day. I do all that stuff. I do all that stuff. And I'm always checking in on what crappy beliefs, because if you come from a difficult childhood,
Michelle Margaret Marques (29:38.672)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (29:52.336)
Yeah. Yeah.
Liz Bull (30:03.588)
And so many people do. You know what I'm talking about, right? You know, as somebody, one of my...
Michelle Margaret Marques (30:05.68)
Yes, I do. I do. She knows enough about my crappy childhood to write a whole entire book, actually.
Liz Bull (30:16.676)
We should do that one day. We should do that one day. But you know, I mean, as somebody, one of my friends once said to me, she said, Lizbeth, nobody would ever accuse your parents of being easy. And somebody else said about, I don't know, just describing something that happened. Wow, they were harsh. So like, there you go, right? So there's just a lot of generational stuff too, you know?
Michelle Margaret Marques (30:18.96)
We should do that.
Michelle Margaret Marques (30:43.728)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (30:44.644)
a famine in Ireland, hard upbringings, The depression, all sorts of things like that. So that stuff, it's not stuff that I said, oh yeah, I think I'll just adopt an attitude of poverty and start, no, it comes through in your genes. No, and then all of a sudden one day you'll be doing something like, where in The world did that come from? Why am I thinking that, right? And you have to clear it because,
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:03.216)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:09.008)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (31:14.148)
It's affecting your whole life. It's affecting your whole life. It affects you every time you go to The grocery store and you're thinking things like, oh, that's really expensive. No, it's not expensive. It just is what it is. You know, it just is what it is. Do I have The money to pay for it? Yes, I do. Yay.
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:14.448)
to. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:25.104)
Yup. Yup.
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:32.336)
Yeah. And The only choice then is do I want to spend The money on it or I don't want to spend money on it? Does it have value to me or it doesn't have value to me?
Liz Bull (31:41.476)
Exactly, exactly right. But you don't have to sit, stand there and feel bad over The avocados. You know, you just...
Michelle Margaret Marques (31:47.408)
It's so true. I love that. I agree. I don't understand coaches on this planet that don't have a coach. I also, and I'm going to put this out here. This is probably a little bit controversial, but I don't understand a business person who doesn't have a coach either, but that's a whole different ballgame.
Liz Bull (32:13.668)
Yeah.
It's true. I think that's absolutely right. And I mean, a lot is, I like listening to Simon Sinek sometimes. He's a very smart guy, I must say, and very articulate. But he was talking, it was interesting, he was talking recently about leadership.
Michelle Margaret Marques (32:27.472)
Yeah, yeah for sure.
Liz Bull (32:36.772)
Leadership. And so many people who are in business don't realize The importance of that. And you're not, nobody's born with leadership or leadership skills. Nobody's naturally born with great communication skills. That's stuff that all has to get learned. And if you come from a difficult family background, hello, what do you think your role models are? You know, they're crap. They're absolute crap. And you need somebody to teach you and coach you on that stuff.
Michelle Margaret Marques (32:58.128)
Mmm.
Yes.
Liz Bull (33:06.116)
kind of put it up there and go, well, okay, so that's what happened. What else could we have done? So that things didn't blow up on you.
Michelle Margaret Marques (33:12.528)
Yeah, yeah. Different structures in place for sure. It's changed my life. Absolutely not only changed my life. That's absolutely.
Liz Bull (33:21.668)
Yeah, and just being, I mean, The other thing is that you're paying for wisdom and knowledge of how The business world works. Because if you've come from a corporate environment and then go into business for yourself, you know nothing. You know nothing. Absolutely nothing at all. Because in that world, things are pretty much done for you. They're done for you. There's somebody else who handles The HR. There's somebody else who...
Michelle Margaret Marques (33:39.568)
Yeah. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (33:45.52)
Yeah. Yeah.
Liz Bull (33:50.884)
handles The marketing. There's somebody else who does this. There's somebody else who takes out The Bloody trash. In business for yourself, guess what? You get to do all that. And what do you know about it? Nothing, nothing.
Michelle Margaret Marques (33:55.728)
Yes.
Michelle Margaret Marques (34:00.368)
Yeah.
Yeah, when I used to own my spa, and of course, as you know, Liz, I'm quite sarcastic. Oh, terrible thing. Whenever anybody would ask me what I did, like what my position was in The spa, I would say, well, you know, I am The toilet cleaner, The receptionist, The marketing person, The person who cleans The floors.
Liz Bull (34:24.356)
Thank you.
Liz Bull (34:30.756)
Exactly right. Exactly right. Exactly right.
Michelle Margaret Marques (34:36.048)
The therapist and The, you know, The salesperson and I just happen to own it.
Liz Bull (34:43.46)
Yeah, that was just an extra little side thing I was doing. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, absolutely. So yeah, I think somebody who can kind of say, okay, this is what you have to do when you're out there on your own. These are The things you need to learn and you need either learn it or hire it out, find people. And then The question is, so who do I hire? And very often those are The people who say, well, actually I do know somebody I can hook you up.
Michelle Margaret Marques (34:46.16)
Exactly.
Michelle Margaret Marques (34:52.048)
Oh my gosh. So.
Michelle Margaret Marques (34:58.608)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (35:13.84)
Yeah, absolutely. And of course, The other role of what we do within coaching is, as you said, The crappy thinking. When we have things that come out of nowhere and knock us off our path, then we have that person to be like, oh, I hear you say this and let's change that to that. And let's change The structures, The behavioral things. Let's put different behavioral patterns in place and different structures in place, right?
Liz Bull (35:14.692)
You know?
Liz Bull (35:41.7)
Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (35:43.664)
So important to have that because as human beings and you know with our minds The way it works set to protect us we often can't see those hidden barriers that that you know voice.
Liz Bull (35:57.572)
We mostly don't see them. We mostly don't see them. That's The reality of it.
Michelle Margaret Marques (36:00.592)
Yeah.
Yeah, so true. Yeah, yeah. Even us, even The highly trained, certified in, you know, The things that we've done, we need that too.
Liz Bull (36:15.972)
We do, we do. They're called blind spots for a reason.
Michelle Margaret Marques (36:18.992)
lane spots exactly because we can't see them for ourselves. Anyway, moving on to The next question before we get too caught up in that.
Liz Bull (36:22.596)
No, you can't. No, you can't.
Liz Bull (36:28.9)
I know, I know, my gosh, The time has gone quick.
Michelle Margaret Marques (36:32.24)
I know, right? These conversations are amazing. As a female entrepreneur, what have been The most significant barriers you've faced and how have you overcome them to create The life and business that you love?
Liz Bull (36:51.364)
You know, I have to say, since I have been involved with The healing business, I haven't noticed big barriers. I have not. Yeah, it's mostly for me, The difficult things for me have been around technology.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:04.208)
and
Liz Bull (37:17.604)
Yeah, I'm finding people who can help me with that sort of thing. Because it doesn't come naturally to me. It doesn't. I mean, even though I do have this engineering background, that was with lighting, doing calculations and that sort of thing, but not with computers. Not with computers.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:17.616)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:23.664)
Thank you.
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:31.248)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:35.376)
Yeah, I know that's something that we've spoke about before. Yeah.
Liz Bull (37:38.724)
Yeah. So that whole world has been, if anything, that's been a barrier for me, is, you know, getting The whole getting online and The whole social media thing and so on. And I don't think that's unique just because I'm a woman. I think, you know, anybody who's perhaps of a certain age or just not particularly, you know, in love with tech has that experience. I'm not alone in that boat. And yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:44.88)
Mm.
Michelle Margaret Marques (37:50.992)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (38:03.152)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (38:07.024)
Oh, absolutely not. I'm slightly younger than you. And so I don't think it comes to age. For me, it was a huge learning curve, a huge, huge learning curve. Prior to COVID, you know, my clients came from me actually going and speaking on stage, being in rooms personally, going to events, things like that. COVID hit and I, yeah, just like most of The rest of The business world had to learn to pivot.
and go online. It was not an easy learning curve for me, that's for sure. I don't deny that and I don't try and hide from that. Have I learned a lot of things now and made a lot of mistakes and learned how to refine The system and everything now? Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And that's why I know that those systems will never stop being refined, will never stop tweaking things and...
Liz Bull (38:38.372)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (38:42.98)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (38:46.852)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (39:04.004)
No. No.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:06.512)
improving things and adding things and taking things away.
Liz Bull (39:11.332)
Yeah, no, it's it's no, that's absolutely right, because it keeps evolving. You know, every time I turn around, zoom is having some kind of update, you know.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:18.128)
I think Zoom has an update every other day.
Liz Bull (39:22.084)
I think so. I think that's right. You know, it's like, oh my gosh, we've just, you know, frozen here. Oh my Lord, it's Zoom having an update, you know.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:26.544)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:36.496)
Technology, amazing when it actually works.
Liz Bull (39:39.908)
Yeah, yeah, no, that's absolutely right. That's absolutely right. But I would say that's been The thing for me is technology. And I don't think it's particularly related to being a woman.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:46.352)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (39:51.12)
Hmm. Yeah. Oh no, I, I, I absolutely agree with that. Let me ask you this question. This is a question I love to ask every one of my guests. And I so love The answers. Looking back, what was The jaw dropping Bloody Hell Chelle moment where everything you thought you knew was challenged and how did it become The catalyst for The incredible path that you're on now?
Liz Bull (40:23.396)
The Bloody Hell moment when everything Bloody Hell Chelle moment when everything I thought I knew was challenged.
Michelle Margaret Marques (40:25.744)
The Bloody Hell Chelle moment.
Michelle Margaret Marques (40:32.336)
Yes.
Liz Bull (40:39.46)
I don't know if it was that so much as...
Liz Bull (40:50.724)
For me, launching into this business came from realizing that I was just done.
with putting up with The testosterone soup and The attitude. I mean, The attitude was just, you know, so bitch what you got, you know, I don't mean to be crude, but really that's what was, you know, in The air and constantly being challenged because I was a woman. I was The only woman in The room and that constant challenge, what I'm saying, just because I was a woman.
Michelle Margaret Marques (41:06.896)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (41:15.6)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (41:32.708)
I mean, I'll give you an example. And this was really a defining, actually this was a defining moment for me when I was just going, I was doing a very large building in, they were all very large, but in Las Vegas, we were in a job meeting and we were doing preliminary things. I was presenting my preliminary findings for refining The plans, The existing plans. And it was actually for The,
Michelle Margaret Marques (41:57.392)
Yeah.
Liz Bull (42:00.004)
They always start with The parking deck and then they do The rest of this stuff. There's a progression in these huge projects. And I said, you know, I've looked at what your engineers have done. And as far as I can see, this thing is just way too much. And I can save you three quarters of a million dollars on this job on just The parking deck. Are you up for that? And they looked at me and The guy said, $750 ,000, you're full of shit. And I said, really?
I said, you know, just like that, you know, whole room full of guys. I'm The only woman and he's telling me I'm full of shit. And I think that was The beginning of it. You know, it's like, I am done with these guys. I'm done. Just done. So, I mean, as it turns out, you know, I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I did take $750 ,000 off that job. And after that, The guy was like, you know.
Michelle Margaret Marques (42:32.08)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (42:35.696)
Yeah.
Michelle Margaret Marques (42:56.752)
to you.
Liz Bull (42:57.38)
I could do no wrong, you know, but it was that, you know, that, that.
Michelle Margaret Marques (43:02.032)
Yeah, constant butting. And that, I mean, as female entrepreneurs, as females in careers all over The planet, we've had that, right? That's what we're battling against still even to this day.
Liz Bull (43:16.612)
Yeah, so I think that that's what did it for me. I just said, you know what? The end is coming soon. The end is coming soon.
Michelle Margaret Marques (43:25.2)
So you tongue that into The catalyst for The life that you have now.
Liz Bull (43:29.092)
Absolutely, because I was already, at that point, I was already doing healing work. I was doing The courses and The studying and all that and discovering that I really had a gift for it, you know, that I have a real gift for it, you know.
Michelle Margaret Marques (43:39.024)
Yeah. Oh, and she really does, she really does listen to us. She really does. I can absolutely attest to that. Frost hand. Yeah.
Liz Bull (43:47.204)
Thank you, Meir. Thank you. It certainly made a difference for you. I mean, I just see The difference. From when we first met to where you are now, oh my gosh, night and day, night and day. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.
Michelle Margaret Marques (43:55.088)
I know, right? I know, I know. Sometimes I look at myself in The mirror and I don't even recognise her staring back at me.
Liz Bull (44:06.404)
No, no, that's absolutely right. You know, there's an aliveness that you have now that you did not have when we first met. Uh -uh. Oh no. Mm -mm. Mm -mm. No.
Michelle Margaret Marques (44:11.408)
Yeah.
That is so true. That is so true. And I don't mind sharing that at all. Liz, I, my gosh, we have, we've come to The end of The time. Can you imagine that? I think we need to do another episode at some point. Yeah.
Liz Bull (44:28.836)
Probably.
Michelle Margaret Marques (44:31.376)
So I ask every one of my guests, this is a little unique thing that I have with my podcast, I ask my guests for a free gift that I then give to my audience. Would you like to give a gift to my audience today? Thank you.
Liz Bull (44:48.516)
happy to oblige, happy to oblige. If you're The least bit curious about what I do and how I do it, then I freely invite you to hop on my calendar. It's www .speaktoliz .com. That's speaktoliz .com. Get on my calendar for an absolutely complimentary session for you to see.
where you are, what would you like out of your life to get some clarity on all that because what I've noticed with many people and I know you have too, Shel, I don't know what I want. I don't know what I want. Or maybe I want this, but oh, I can never get it or whatever. Or maybe, wait a minute, can I really do that? There's all those sorts of questions. So it's a good opportunity to get clear and complimentary, complimentary.
Michelle Margaret Marques (45:39.824)
Oh, thank you so much. That's incredible. Guys, I have to really make you understand that that gift that Les has just offered right now is very, very valuable. As you've heard us talk about, I've gone from, you know, struggling with various different childhood traumas and things that were going on in my background to this crazy alive person that you can hear today.
And it is partly thanks to this incredible woman right here. Liz, thank you so much for joining me on my podcast. Thank you so much. You are an incredible, incredible human being. And I cannot wait to speak to you again. Well.
Liz Bull (46:14.628)
My pleasure. My pleasure. Absolutely.
Liz Bull (46:23.236)
It'll be great.
Michelle Margaret Marques (46:25.008)
Well, listeners, thank you so much for joining me today. I hope you listen to The next episode of Bloody Hell Chelle. Until then, be incredible and take care. Mwah!
